Abstract

Social relationships are indispensable to the development of humanity. This development takes place from early childhood, but it is in adolescence that this process expands and becomes more complex due to the search for peers. However, for adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), this complexity is even greater due to difficulties in social interaction and communication. Due to these difficulties, the study aimed to understand how hostile emotions (anger) and aggressive behavior are managed in the social relationships of adolescents with ASD — nonverbal from the perspective of teachers of specialized educational care in primary and secondary schools in full-time schools in a municipality in the state of Espírito Santo. This is a cross-sectional study of an exploratory nature and qualitative approach, submitted to and approved by the human research ethics committee (CAAE no. 76564123.9.0000.5281), using semi-structured interviews and inventories on social interactions (BRIEF and TRF) with these teachers. The thematic analysis technique was used to analyze the content of the interviews and calculate the scores according to the instructions of the psychometric instruments used. The interviews with the teachers revealed a lack of training on the subject of autism and its particularities in order to develop individual and collective intervention strategies; a lack, above all, aimed at managing aggressive behavior and avoiding hostile emotions of irritation and anger in order to improve social relations between peers. The results of the questionnaires, in turn, corroborated the systematic literature review, which, in addition to showing few studies on ASD in non-verbal adolescents, pointed out that the emotions and behaviors of adolescents with nonverbal ASD are neurobiological constructs but tend to show benefits when positively influenced by social relationships. Having achieved the proposed objectives, the study proved relevant for shedding light on the subject, although it has limitations in terms of sample size, suggesting the importance of future research.
