Abstract

In recent years, there has been growing interest in investigating the beneficial and medicinal properties of Non-Conventional Food Plants (PANCs), particularly in their application for protecting against degenerative diseases and promoting health and nutrition. PANCs are rich sources of bioactive compounds, such as antioxidants, vitamins, macrominerals, flavonoids, and alkaloids, which confer immunomodulatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties. The fortification of dairy products with PANCs, such as Moringa oleifera leaves, wild passion fruit (Passiflora cincinnata), and ora-pro-nóbis (Pereskia aculeata), has shown significant potential in enhancing the nutritional quality of these products, as well as adding functional value. This systematic review highlighted the positive effects of PANCs on the human body and their application in dairy products, revealing that the synergistic combination of these compounds with dairy constituents can lead to the development of innovative products with enhanced nutritional functionalities. Although previous studies have explored the incorporation of PANCs into dairy products, further research is needed to optimize these effects and ensure the safety and efficacy of their therapeutic use. Ongoing research is essential to unlock the full potential of PANCs in the dairy industry and leverage their benefits on a global scale, promoting consumer well-being and enabling the development of future pharmaceutical formulations.
