Biological properties and chemical composition of the species Lantana camara L.: a bibliographical review
Keywords:
Review, Lantana camara L, Cambará, Biological potentialAbstract
Lantana camara Linn is a plant that contains a wide variety of bioactive substances with potential utility in the treatment of various diseases. This plant species, found globally and recognized for its vibrant flowers, is extensively studied for its diverse chemical composition, with notable components including flavonoids, triterpenes, and glycosides, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. This study aims to conduct a literature review on the pharmacological properties, chemical composition, and biological potential of L. camara. The chemical characterization reveals a wide variety of phytochemicals such as alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, tannins, terpenes, phenols, carbohydrates and anthraquinones, mainly lantadenes A, B, C and D, germacrenes A, B and D, valencene and γ-gurjunene. Due to its phytochemical diversity, the plant exhibits various biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, and anticancer activities, all documented in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Therefore, L. camara is a rich source of chemical compounds with several promising biological properties, indicating potential for the development of new treatments. However, further studies are necessary to more clearly understand its mechanisms of action and pharmacological potential.
