Chemical and biological profile of cubiu (Solanum sessilliflorum dunal): a review based on an integrated approach

Abstract

The cubiu (Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal), a fruit native to the Amazon, has attracted scientific interest primarily due to its medicinal potential. This research aimed to investigate studies on cubiu over the past 23 years, focusing on its chemical, physicochemical, and biological profile, especially emphasizing in vitro and in vivo assays through an integrative literature review. Databases such as Medline/Pubmed, SCOPUS, SciELO, among others, were consulted, and 158 studies were identified, of which 65 were removed due to duplication. After evaluation, 50 studies were selected based on inclusion criteria. Cubiu has a chemistry rich in phenolic compounds and minerals and reveals pharmacological, medicinal, and nutritional potentials important for health, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, and benefits for treating symptoms of noncommunicable chronic diseases. Nevertheless, a scarcity of in vitro, in vivo, and especially clinical trials was observed, indicating the need for further research to understand its properties and benefits for human health.
