Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the main prevalent chronic diseases in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), being associated with sleep, which may also influence the development and control of the disease, playing a relevant role in metabolic and hormonal regulation. Therefore, the present study aims to relate the severity of insomnia, food consumption, and excess weight in diabetic patients treated in primary care in the city of Ubá, Minas Gerais. This is a cross-sectional, epidemiological study conducted with individuals with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus, users of the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS), living in Ubá, MG. The volunteers were approached at basic health units and polyclinics. A questionnaire was administered regarding sociodemographic aspects and lifestyle, sleep habits and medication use, assessment of food consumption using the Sistema de Vigilância Alimentar e Nutricional (SISVAN) questionnaire, and anthropometric evaluation. Of the 358 volunteers, 13,7% presented moderate or severe clinical insomnia, with a prevalence in females (85,7% vs 69,3%; p=0,018). According to SISVAN data, participants with moderate or severe insomnia consumed fruits (61,2% vs 37,9%; p=0,002) and vegetables (75,5% vs 90,0%; p=0,004) less frequently the previous day compared to those without clinical insomnia. It was concluded that higher consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables, and legumes was associated with a lower prevalence of moderate or severe insomnia, reinforcing the importance of a healthy diet.
