Innovation and sustainability in startups: Business models, practices, and challenges in the circular economy.
Abstract
This study investigated how startups have been innovating in their business models to enable the circular economy, analyzing practices, technologies, and strategies focused on sustainability and the creation of socio-environmental value. A systematic review of a descriptive and exploratory nature was conducted, with a qualitative approach, following the PRISMA protocol, based on original publications from 2015 to 2025 in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The analysis of 11 selected articles showed that startups operate in sectors such as fashion, cosmetics, agrifood, and foodtechs, adopting solutions supported by digital technologies, strategic frameworks, and collaborative governance. Nevertheless, they face barriers related to costs, scalability, and cultural resistance. However, the relevance of collaborative models, incentive policies, and multisectoral engagement was noted as consolidation drivers. The findings provide support for public policies, financial instruments, and business strategies, contributing to highlight the strategic role of startups in the transition to sustainable business models.
